Welcome to the Alabama Connection Sale!

Grandview Farms was one of the founders of the Alabama Connection Sale 37 years ago. We have always worked toward producing functional, fertile, eye-appealing and predictable cattle for our purebred and commercial producers. By implementing intense selection in genomics and phenotype in our breeding program, we have been driven to improve upon the attributes of this great breed of cattle. We believe this offering demonstrates our years of commitment to this plan and it is our hope that these cattle will help you to achieve your goals in your program.

On a personal note; I have been able to turn a passion into a career and am eternally grateful to have done so at Grandview Farms for 32 years. I am also very thankful for the many great friends and experiences we have had because of Delmo Payne,Grandview Farms and the Santa Gertrudis breed. Lastly, as everyone knows who’s in the “cow business” the support, work, patience and love from our families is incalculable. THANK YOU Marla, Kaleb and Kolt.

37 th Annual ALABAMA CONNECTION SALE October 4, 2025

Born and raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, Delmo Payne grew up immersed in the cattle business. His father made a living as a livestock dealer, and from an early age Payne developed a sharp eye for quality cattle—an instinct that would later define his legacy in the Santa Gertrudis breed. Though cattle were in his blood, Payne’s first passion was education. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Mississippi State University, he began teaching biology and coaching basketball, roles he loved for the relationships they fostered with students. He later earned a master’s degree in school administrati on and served as both principal and educational consultant. But in 1968, while traveling in California, Payne saw his first Santa Gertrudis herd. The sight left an impression he would never forget. A Life Built on Cattle, Community and Commitment: The Legacy of Delmo Payne

By the early 1970s, with a growing family, Payne transitioned into bu siness. He built a successful career in home manufacturing, founding Payne Home and Auto, North Ri ver Homes, and River Birch Homes, which together spanned more than three decades of entrepreneurial success. Still, the memory of those striking red cattle lingered.

In 1983, Payne acted on that me mory, purchasing a Santa

Gertrudis herd from Anne Upchurch of Grey Rocks Ranch. This marked the birth of Grandview Farms in Hamilton, Alabama. Over time, his herd grew to 300 cows, and his commitment to improving ge netics and breed standards positioned him as a leader in the industry. With the help of ranch manager Brent Shaw and herdsman Seth Holmes, Payne embraced artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and later, in-vitro fertilization—technologies that strengthened his herd and advanced the breed. Beyond breeding, Payne became a driving force in marketing Santa Gertrudis cattle. He co-founded the Alabama Connection Sale in 1988 and later the Crimson Classic Sale, both of which created vital outlets for breeders and commercial producers. His cattle consistently reflected the qualities he valued most: strong maternal traits, structural correctness, and marketable carcass weights. Grandview Farms went on to produce multiple national champions.

2

37th Annual ALABAMA CONNECTION SALE October 4, 2025

Payne’s service to the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) further cemented his influence. He served on the breed standards committee, as vice president of marketing, and ultimately as president of the associ ation in the late 1990s. His leadership was rooted in his belief that the cattle business is, at its core, a people business.

“Cattle are our product, but we’re really in the people business,” Payne has often said. “Without repeat customers, we wouldn’t be in business.” Payne’s impact has always extended beyond cattle. Together with his wife, Wilmuth, he raised two daughters, Emma Kate Mikels and Molly Ainsworth, and takes great pride in his six grandc hildren. Summers on the ranch with family remain a cherished tradition.

Reflecting on his decades in ranching and business, Payne is quick to give credit where he believes it belongs. “Raising cattle has been the hardest business I’ve been in, but I love it the most. God has been good to me and my family, and I give Him all the credit.” From teacher and coach to entrepreneur, rancher, and industry leader, Delmo Payne’s story is one of perseverance, innovation, and devotion. His legacy lives not only in the cattle he bred, but in the people he mentored, the sales he helped build, and the community of cattlemen and women he has long called friends.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS I have known Delmo Payne for close to forty-five years. During those years, he has been a confidante, a mentor, but most of all, my friend. We have weathered many seasons together. He helped both Arlin and me to carry on and persevere in the cattle business when Howard passed away. Without his guidance and advice at that time, there probably wouldn’t be a Tinney Farms today. Because of his integrity and his knowledge of this breed, he will influence and impact generations of breeders to come.

He and “HT” were the best of friends. They shared laughter and good times and the stories they could tell…They got bigger and taller with each telling! Delmo, I can’t possibly tell you what you meant to him. Your “little buddy” thought the world of you. I will be forever grateful to you for that. So here’s to you Delmo…May the Lord bless you and keep you. Job well done! It is an honor to call you my friend.

- Retha & Arlin

I bought my first Grandview female over 30 years ago and never stopped. Not only can you count on the cattle to perform, but also the people. Grandview has been a leading ranch in genetics, sales, show ring and promotion.

We have had great success with Grandview Farms’ genetics. We love our Grandview Little Annie and Grandview 828 influenced animals. We are so appreciative of the Payne family’s commitment and support of the Santa Gertrudis breed and genetic improvement.

Delmo, Brent and the entire Grandview Farms family represent high quality and tremendous character.

-Y.N. Strait Family

Thank you, David Harris

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

When we first got started in the Santa Gertrudis breed 10 years ago, Grandview Farms was one of the first calls we made. This call laid the foundation of much of the DMC herd as Grandview genetics run deep in every pedigree on our place. A lot has changed over the years but one thing that has never faltered is the relationship I have had with the Grandview crew. I could go on and on about the Grandview cattle but the greatest thing I gained was the friendships of Delmo Payne and Brent Shaw. Delmo and Brent invested their time and knowledge into me personally and shared a wealth of experiences and opportunities with me that I would not have had if it had not been for them. The late night texts from Delmo on breeding advice, thoughts on cattle or even life advice were always received with gratitude and were a true

testament to Delmo’s commitment and genuine care for his friends. I am forever thankful for the mentorship and everlasting friendships that I have gained from Delmo Payne and everyone involved Grandview Farms. Enjoy retirement guys!

- DMC Farm

Throughout the years, we here at Briggs Ranches have had the privilege of getting to know Grandview Farms and their owners Delmo Payne and Family. During this time Delmo has been a true leader not only in the cattle industry but also in business and public service. They have conducted themselves in all the factors to be at the fo refront in today’s cattle industry. Ultra sounding, performance testing, DNA data just to name a few. Several years ago, Delmos great nephew spent the summer with us. He left a lasting impression, one of his favorites saying that made a lasting impression on me, is that life is another adventure. Well old friend. I hope you can look forward to your next big adventure. Su Amigo, Joe Jones

VETERINARIAN LETTERS

It has been a privilege to have been involved with Grandview Farms over the last 25+ years as an embryologist I have seen first hand the commitment Delmo and Brent made to breeding the best genetics this breed has to offer and it truly has made them one of the premier breeders of Santa Gertrudis cattle in the country so as this era sadly comes to an end the integrity and genetics they’ve established will continue for years to come and the friendships kindled along the way will never fade.

Thank you Darrel Gray DVM

Today’s sale is a rare opportunity to be a part of genetics developed over a lifetime of breeding, management, and as I said, blood, sweat and tears. Grandview Farms is Delmo Payne, his family, Brent Shaw and his family along with all the animals that they dearly love and nurture. This farms’ management has stood the test of time. I have had the privilege to be associated with Grandview Farms from 1994. I remember one herd work day about that time. When I arrived, the pens were full of cattle with hours of work ahead of us. Mr. Payne was there and he said he wanted to help push cows to the chute. The thought entered my mind, oh no,we will be here all day and into the night. As the day progressed, the chute was never empty. The cows were handed firmly, but with compassion. And there were no wrecks. I learned that day Delmo Payne was a cowman.

As the years progressed, I learned that not only was he a cowman, but also a Southern Gentleman. It has been a challenge, but also a pleasure of my life to be a small part of Grandview Farms. I thank you for that opportunity.

Sincerely, Mickey Spillers DVM

SANTA GERTRUDIS GENETICS

Santa Gertrudis Breeders International’s (SGBI) genetic evaluation is one of the most comprehensive among the Bos indicus-influenced breeds, ensuring profitable genetics can be selected for your operation. Over the past 12 years, Santa Gertrudis breeders have increased selection pressure on traits that have a positive influence on profitability. Profit starts with a live calf and increases when industry endpoint tar gets are hit. Regardless of your marketing strategy – selling by the pound at weaning, retaining ownership and gridmarketing, establishing a consumer-direct market, or taking advantage of the replacement female market – Santa Gertrudis genetics ensure that herd goals can be reached SGBI Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expec ted to perform, relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. SGBI is a leader in the adoption and implementation of cutting-edge ge netic technology. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus-influenced cattle. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GE EPDs) has resulted in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. Currently, the association has access to more than 14,000 performance-verifying DNA samples. In addition, to being the first Bos indicus-influenced breed to offer GE-EPDs, SGBI was the first beef breed to implement single-step methodology for the incorporation of genetic information into the genetic evaluation. This approach maximizes use of data reported on all animals throughout the pedigree and greatly improves EPD accuracy. SGBI Indexes SGBI offers three selection indexes for producers. Indexes are multi-trait selection tools designed to assist cattle producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. Indexes provide an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and the calves were exposed to the same environment. SGBI’s indexes provide performance insight to three beef production business models. The results are reported as a percentile ranking for each index. Balanced Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It further assumes that producers are either 1) marketing carcasses on the grid or 2) that buyers of their feeder calves base pricing on feedlot and carcass performance. This selection tool is designed to assist cattlemen who retain ownership through the feeding phase or market their calf crop to buyers focu sed on feedlot performance and/or carcass quality. Cow/Calf Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. However, it assumes all calves are marketed at weaning or soon thereafter. It further assumes that feeder calf buyers don’t base decisions on feedlot or carcass performance, making these traits less relevant to profitability. Producers marketing their calf crop at weaning, by the pound, would utilize this index when making animal selection decisions. Terminal Index: This index assumes that producers are not keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It assumes that producers are marketing carcasses on the grid, making carcass traits rele vant to their business. This index fits operations using Santa Gertrudis bulls as terminal sires and retai ning ownership of their calf crop through the feeding phase.
