High Noon at Early Morning

BLC High Noon 624J PB101098, 90.9% Braunvieh, Homozygous Polled

High Noon is a son of BLC EZ Sleep 811G • High Noon is Top 1% of the breed for API • Top 3% of the breed for TI • Top 4% for CED & top 25% for BW • Top 20% for CEM, 45% for WW & 45% for YW • Act. BW 68 lb. out of a 2 year old Toronto daughter

• The sun had just come up, but High Noon had already checked his cows, breakfasted on native grass and is headed for a drink of water. • High Noon makes being a rancher easier. He’s compliant and his calves are, too. No worries about being stalked by the herd bull. • We’ll sleep easy when these cows and heifers calve next spring… we haven’t assisted a High Noon calf yet.

• His calves are easy to sell. They’re attractive and have appropriate thickness and growth. • We have confidence in High Noon, his data and his family. 13 of the 14 animals in his 3-generation pedigree worked in our Flint Hills pastures. • Contact us for semen on BLC High Noon or his sire, BLC EZ Sleep.

Braunvieh influenced yearling heifers from Randy Olson at Altoona, KS. They show us what a Braunvieh bull can do for a commercial herd. They’re spending the summer on our Flint Hills grass, but will be back home at Randy’s to calve next January.

President’s Message with Todd Hill

It is very clear that the seedstock cattle industry is in trying times. Extended drought has plagued many of our members, causing herd reductions across the board. As producers, our costs of input have mostly doubled (or more) in the last three years. And while higher prices at the sale barn are welcome, it has caused many seedstock producers to sell calves at weaning rather than develop them into registered animals, negatively impacting the association’s revenue. I have been on several other breeds’ websites, and it is clear that the issues our breed is dealing with are issues ALL breeds are dealing with. So, what should breeders do to remain a viable force in the marketplace? First, I think we need to clearly identify not only who our customer is, but what they are looking for. Those who were able to attend the annual meet ing heard a poignant presentation on the subject by International Genetic Solutions Director of Commercial and Industry Operations Chip Kemp. Kemp knows the seedstock business and what it takes to be successful. He made a clear case that, for the breed not only to survive but thrive, we must recognize that our customer is the commercial cattleman looking to improve his/her genetic package. We must ask them what they need to be successful. Are they looking for more maternal? More growth? Is poll status important? Is color important? What birth weight is acceptable? Then we must produce what our customer needs, not what we think they need! Let that sink in for a minute. Are you asking those questions and mak ing the appropriate adjustments in your program, or are you producing what you think the customer needs and wondering why he doesn’t show up at your farm/ranch? The answer to that question is fundamental to your program’s success in the marketplace. If you are struggling, I would ask myself hard questions about this very thing. Be a part of the solution. In his presentation, Kemp was very clear – our customer is demanding cattle backed by more performance data and more accurate EPDs. Simply put – more proof and less fluff. We all need to try to improve the quality of our herds, and you simply can’t manage what you don’t measure! Saying our cat tle are good is simply NOT enough! We need to performance test more bulls. It is up to us as breeders to turn in accurate data on the largest contemporary groups possible to improve the accuracy of our EPDs. For all who consider themselves to be seedstock producers, whether you have five head or 100, we use THR and turn in data on the ones we register AND the ones we don’t. I can’t tell you how critical that is to the future success of this breed. Second, be a part of the solution. If you have an idea that would improve what we are doing, share it with a board member. If you see an issue we need to deal with, please call me or another board member so we can address them appropriately. If you are not on the list already, go to the home page of the website and find the link to sign up for the association’s eblasts. They are the best source for information coming from the association. I assure you, this board has been busy trying to use what assets we have at our disposal to position the Braunvieh breed to flourish when things turn our way. We are preparing the launch of a new, more user friendly and resource ful website at half the cost of the current one. We are planning the launch of a YouTube channel where you can post approved videos about anything on the subject of Braunvieh. We are working to build a better system of communica tion with members. It is an honor to lead this organization. We all love these cattle. The Braun vieh is the BEST continental cross on English cattle. Let’s build the breed’s reputation together. Let’s put aside our differences and work together to move the breed to the place in the market it deserves! BW

New DNA Submission Form Instructions

1. Begin by logging into your DigitalBeef account. On the left hand menu with red and green tabs, click “Herd Mgmt” followed by “DNA”

2. Here you will see the “Choose from My Animals” button. Click this to pull up a list of all animals – active, legacy (culled or transferred) and performance (P prefix animals). Click the box to the left of the animal to pull it into the queue.

3. You’ll see several options here, but notice that the “Tattoo/Tag” and “Reg No” columns automatically fill in, as well as the recorded dam and sire. “Type” refers to the sample type being tested. “Barcode” refers to the barcode on the blood/hair cards and TSUs (AllFlex Tags). If you don’t yet have a card, or your card doesn’t have a barcode, you can order new cards from the website, Braunvieh.org . The right-hand side contains all the DNA testing options. If you need to add an additional animal for testing, you can click “Add Request” underneath this animal’s info and search for the next animal. When you are done filling everything out, click “Submit to Staff.”  Note that 100K also includes parentage markers. The “Alt Sire” column is useful if you are trying to parentage test between two bulls – make sure at least one of these bulls has SNP markers on file to test to.

4. This is what your screen should look like when you have successfully submitted a DNA request. This is not an automated process – a staff member must approve this submission prior to the next step.

5. Here you see a sample email which you will receive directly from DigitalBeef – keep in mind that this is not coming from a staff member, so it may look like spam or even go to your spam folder. When you receive this email is when your DigitalBeef account is simultaneously billed for the testing. Be sure not to send any forms of payment to the lab. Billing is separate and done through the registry.

6. You will print off the PDF attachment and send it, along with your samples, directly to Neogen. BW

Breeding by the Numbers

By Kelsey Pope, Contributing Writer

Across U.S. breed associations , initiatives or requirements have been implemented that generate records for each cow and her calf within a herd, regardless of registration status. At the Braunvieh Association of America (BAA), this practice is referred to as whole herd reporting or total herd reporting (THR). Historically, genetic evaluations required only records from animals that were being regis tered. However, there is a movement across the industry to use data and metrics in evaluating genetics in commer cial cattle production. Chip Kemp with the American Simmental Association and International Genetics Solutions (IGS) Commercial and Industry Operations, an industry leader in commer cial genetic evaluation. Kemp spoke at the BAA Annual Meeting in Fort Worth in January, and he emphasized the commercial aspect of associations, and the need for responsible genotyping to ensure accurate and reliable genetic information. “What’s important in your overall program success is reporting all of those actual data points to the pedigree for THR,” Kemp said. “Because the more data inputted, the smarter the genomics become as helpful commercial tools.” Genomics has been proven to improve cattle breeding, focusing on accuracy and predicting biological outcomes. However, genomics cannot replace THR. When actual, raw data is submitted on animals, it will override the ge nomic test and have a bigger impact, making the genom ics a lot more accurate. Commercial clients who report data need to continue doing so, and more support is needed to help others start reporting as well. “How do we catch up?” Kemp asked. “The beef business is moving so fast, and for whatever reason, that popula tion might be behind the eight ball. Now, we have the

tools to make it possible to have an impact. This is big data and we have to accept where we are at right now. But this is YOUR big data, that’s the difference.” The group evaluating this data is IGS, a collaborative to serve the commercial beef business with multi-breed genetic evaluation. Data has been gathered from nearly 20 progressive breed associations from around the globe for three decades, with a combined 20 million animal records. Their goal is to deliver user-friendly and science based genetic predictions to enhance beef cattle produc ers’ profitability. IGS partners have taken a revolutionary step by presenting the resulting EPD on a common base, allowing commercial producers to directly compare the genetic merit of animals regardless of breed composition. Genomics has been proven to improve cattle breeding, focusing on accuracy and predicting biological outcomes. However, genomics cannot replace THR. “The core premise is that IGS is your genetic service provider that provides your EPDs and indexes for you to push those out to your clients,” Kemp said. Kemp outlined four steps of a Genetic Action Plan to help commercial cow-calf operations get the genetic foot ing necessary for long-term, multigenerational success based on data from IGS. “You want a plan,” he said. “You need tangible steps. You demand credible actions that can benefit your beef business and your family.”

Braunvieh World  Summer 2024

Design a Crossbred Cow Herd The first step is to get busy building a responsibly-crossed cow herd that works in your business model with your man agement scheme and within your en vironment. If you are already on that path, take the time to evaluate where your herd is and if other breeds or families within breeds are warranted. The responsibly crossed cow is your risk-management strategy, especially going forward. She is key to ensuring operational success and aiding your family to keep the next generation on that piece of dirt that you call home.

an exercise in guessing and focus grouping. Nearly all breed associations have or are working on a WLC index. It is important to study the underlying differences in these indexes.” Kemp also noted that an index listed as a “maternal index” is likely not a WLC index. Some maternal indexes all but ignore terminal value. Other mater nal indexes put an excessive amount of pressure on weaning weight, making the maternal metric more of a growth met ric. A WLC index appropriately weighs the importance of maternal and terminal traits to focus on whole-enterprise profit.

“For most of you, that should look like a roughly 50/50 cow herd of your British breed of choice and your con tinental breed of choice,” Kemp said. He added, “FYI – USDA MARC highlights that most continental breeds generate females that now weigh less as mature cows than their British counterparts.” For those who are already committed to the advantages of a crossbred female, it is also responsible to review your plan from time to time. Are there breed types you should be considering to improve some of your weaknesses? Are there lines with a particular breed type that should be getting greater consideration? Constantly monitor, ana lyze and adjust where necessary. Source Hybrid Bulls The second step is using hybrid bulls in a commercial cow-calf program. They provide you with genetic value, ease of breeding scheme, complementarity of your cow herd, uniformity of your calf crop, paternal heterosis and, often, they can be sourced at a lower price point than their straightbred counterparts. “The point is, hybrid bulls can deliver a serious genetic punch, in many ways far superior to straightbred bulls,” Kemp said. “And they add usability and uniformity at the same time to allow you to maintain your reliance on responsible crossbreeding.” He also noted that you aren’t married to a particular breed type; you are married to the deliverable. Know what you want the outcome to be and align with the genetic prowess demanded and the uniformity that is required. Incorporate a Whole Life Cycle Index For producers keeping your own replacement females, the third step is incorporating a credible whole life cycle (WLC) index as a serious data point in your program to ensure profitability and sustainability. Should it be your only data? Clearly not. Can it be misapplied? Yes. A WLC index is for those keeping their own replacements and looking to generate in-demand terminal calves. Opera tions doing something other than the combination of those two things should use a different index or metric. An appropriately designed and scientifically credible WLC index takes into account all of the economically relevant traits associated with the beef business at large. Examples would be fertility, survivability, cow longevity, cost-effective growth, marbling, Yield Grade, etc. “For a WLC index to have legitimacy and merit, it needs to incorporate actual cow longevity records – and lots of them,” Kemp said. “Without this, the whole effort is just

“You want a plan. You need tangible steps. You demand credible actions that can benefit your beef business and your family.” – Chip Kemp “Remember, the goal is profit, not just maximizing or minimizing a given metric,” Kemp said. “Single-trait selection for any one trait is dangerous. The only measure worthy of single-trait selection is profit. Period. Hence, the use of the appropriate index.” Recognize the Importance of Purebred Seedstock The final step in Kemp’s Genetic Action Plan is to recog nize the need for high-merit, purebred seedstock for both personal success at the commercial cow-calf level and for the industry’s overall profitability. Direct utilization of purebred genetics lies most heavily at the seedstock level to provide precision-built hybrids to fuel commercial suc cess and sustainability for the long haul. “Those genetics are fundamentally crucial to the beef business,” Kemp said. “A commercial cow-calf operator may need to use purebreds to ‘prime the pump’ of their personal operation to get to the desired approximate 50/50 cow base. Going forward, they directly benefit from their seedstock provider’s responsible use of purebred genetics in building hybrid bulls.” The quickest and most impactful manner to move that purebred – or single-breed – cow-calf operation to a more resilient and balanced genetic profile is by introducing a purebred that adds the strengths of a complementary breed. Again, if the cow herd is excessively British-type, then that would mean using a purebred sire(s) of conti nental origin. This results in building the roughly 50/50 daughters that are needed and referenced as the base of the long-term hybrid model. Of course, this can also be accomplished or augmented through AI or purchases of appropriately crossed replacements. Most important, use data to empower your human re lationships. The success of your cattle program is too im portant for your family to leave merely to chance. What’s the primary goal of nearly every beef producer? Passing the family business on to the next generation. “If you want your family to continue to be in the beef business 20 to 30 years from now, we need to serve the commercial customer,” Kemp concluded. “If we are going to serve them, we have to serve them metrics.” BW
