The Santa Gertrudis Foundation has found ways to address some of the struggles and turn a potential issue into an opportunity. “Complaints aren’t always a bad thing,” says Debbie Townsend, Santa Gertrudis breeder and Mid-Coast affiliate past president and vice president. “Sometimes some of the best ideas come about by hearing someone com- plain, and finding a way to fix it.” She adds that having the International Super Sale at the Houston Live- stock Show and Rodeo can be trying. “For anyone who has tried to fight the rodeo crowd and find somewhere to dine after the sale, you have reason to complain.” In an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Santa Gertrudis Founda- tion, the affiliate created the Red Legacy Dinner Dance, featuring a catered meal and dancing immediately following the International Super Sale. Tagged as “One Night, Two Big Events,” the Red Legacy Dinner and Dance was a huge success, hosting 175 diners. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Santa Gertrudis Foundation for education and research.
