BETTER BEEF CONTEST AWARDS 2020 NATIONAL JUNIOR SANTA GERTRUDIS SHOW

D uring the 2020 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show, 162 heifers and bulls were scanned as part of the Better Beef Contest. The purebred Santa Gertru- dis heifers averaged 4.38 percent intramuscular fat (%IMF) and a 1.15 square inch ribeye area per hundredweight (REA/cwt). The purebred bulls averaged 3.99 %IMF and 1.10 REA/cwt. Star 5 heifers averaged 4.93 %IMF and 1.15 REA/ cwt. These numbers show a stark improvement from past years’ averages and prove that the Santa Gertrudis breed is making huge strides in carcass improvement.
