many years ago has become a huge part of the family’s lives. Many of their wildest dreams have come true; many of them associated with agriculture and the Santa Gertrudis breed. Last year, the family was devastated by the loss of Roland and he and Elia’s daughter, Jessica. Jessica Sanchez, MD, was the couple’s oldest daughter. Jessica was respected by those who knew her and was known to be a giving, caring, loving and uplifting individual who lived to serve others in the most unselfish way. She will greatly be missed by many. Javid, Braxton and Carlos Sanchez are just three of her cousins who she admired dearly and helped attend the NJSGS each year. Doc and Jessica have left behind legacies each of us will honor and remember.

Roland attended New Mexico State University, graduated as a civil engineer and eventually changed career paths to medicine. Roland met his wife, Elia, and the two were soon married. They moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Roland would complete his residency. One night, Roland picked up a Santa Gertrudis breed magazine and rekindled his interest in Santa Gertrudis. Soon after, the couple bought their first Santa Gertrudis, a bull named Mr. Peanut. Roland and Elia steadily built their

herd and began to build a base of bull buyers. As the herd grew, so did their family: Jessica, Alicia, Adolfo, Roland II “Scooter,” Florian and Emilio. In 1988, the Sanchez children became deeper involved in the operation by participating with Santa Gertrudis and attending the NJSGS. As the children got older and the herd grew, Red Doc Farm began to break into the bull business. The Sanchez family continues to evolve as a commercially oriented seedstock operation. Red Doc Farm was instrumental in getting the NJSGS Bull Show started and has been a long-time sponsor. The magnificent breed of cattle that once caught the eye of a young man
