of Captain King’s home ranch. The breed has shown to have a relatively high degree of both heat and tick resistance, and the Santa Gertrudis’ characteristics include ease of calving, good mothering ability and an abun- dant milk supply. Almost a century since Monkey was calved, the Santa Gertrudis breed can be found worldwide. King Ranch has long been recognized as a world leader in utilizing state-of-the-art genetic technologies in order to make con- stant improvements to the breed. The ranch is one of, and in some cases the initial, innovator in using within-herd expected progeny differences (EPDs), including molecular DNA in their EPD analyses to improve breeding accu- racies and going to the single-step method of determining EPDs for 14 phenotypes. At the end of the day, as with Monkey, the goal remains to produce the most profitable, highest qual- ity cattle possible that can survive the harsh South Texas environment. All of this can be traced back to a single, mischievous bull calf named Monkey.
