SANTA GERTRUDIS

By Kenley Kincannon, District 1 Director

H ello and Happy New Year! I’m Kenley Kincannon and I’m from West Columbia, Texas. I currently serve as a director for the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association (NJSGA). I’ve been showing these beautiful, cherry red cattle for six years, and I have always looked up to the NJSGA Board of Direc tors ever since I participated in my first junior nationals.

to research and study, you might find yourself in an unfor tunate situation. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) are a key tool in selecting the perfect bull. EPDs can improve weaning and birth weights, improve genetics and help your herd have desirable traits. The bull contributes to almost 80 percent of a herd’s genetic improvement, so it’s important to be educated on where your herd is lacking when select ing the perfect bull. Selecting the wrong bull could hurt your profit, your herd’s performance and production. I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming major shows. I hope the new year treats everyone well!

I would like to take a minute to discuss the importance of bull selection. This topic is very important for cattle pro ducers who are trying to enhance the performance of their herds. Picking a bull for your herd is like trying to find a missing puzzle piece that fits just right. If you don’t take time
