H owdy! My name is Cale Cornelius; I am 16 and from Timpson, Texas. I am finishing my second year on the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Asso

ciation (NJSGA) Board and am currently serving as president. The NJSGA Board has had a good year attending shows, sales and events within the Santa Ger trudis breed. The Santa Gertrudis breed has helped shape me into the leader I am today and has helped me make lifelong friendships. I couldn’t imagine my life without my cherry red cattle. I have recently started expanding my herd and learning how to study genetics. Genetic evaluation is vital to a successful breeding program. Every step matters, whether it is selecting bulls to breed with your herd or putting in a set of embry os. We, as breeders, have to make crucial decisions to help ensure that we get high-quality calves on the ground. I have been very impressed with the steps the Santa Gertrudis breed has taken to enhance our breed and genetics. Our breed has been consistently improving by using the DigitalBeef system to help record accurate data to help breeders in making decisions. We are also increasing the use of contemporary groups. Contemporary groups are said to be the cornerstone of a breed’s genetic evaluation. As a small breeder, I have not had the chance to record a contemporary group, but it is a goal for my herd to one day be able to utilize this tool. I am so proud of the progress that the Santa Gertrudis breed has made and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
