AMER I CAN RED PROGRAM DEBUTS AT NCBA By Lisa Bard, Editor

According to SGBI Associate Director Webb Fields, also in attendance at the reception, the evening was filled with excitement and buzz around the Ameri- can Red program. The enthusiasm was apparent at the reception and the days after from visitors trying to gather more information on participating in this groundbreaking program. “The industry has been craving an opportunity to get behind red-hided, heat-tolerant, heterosis-powered cattle, and this program will assist in showcas- ing these genetics and help capture premiums on their value and added

T he American Red program – a col- laboration between Santa Gertru- dis Breeders International (SGBI) and the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) – was launched at a reception at the Cattle Industry Con- vention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Trade Show, held Feb. 5 in San Antonio. Well attended by SBGI and RAAA breeders and lead- ers, the program also drew the atten- tion of some of the more than 9,000 cattle producers, industry partners and stakeholders who attended the 2020 Convention and Trade Show. The reception was held during the opening evening of the NCBA Trade Show and featured giveaway cups with the American Red logo, takeaway litera- ture and conversations with leaders from both the Santa Gertrudis and Red Angus breeds. “It is evident from the industry buzz that the American Red program has caught the attention of cattlemen from the Carolinas to California,” says John Ford, SGBI executive director. “Beef producers who have been searching for a red-hided, heat-tolerant animal with a profitable blend of maternal traits, adapt- ability, growth and marbling recognize the American Red is the perfect choice.” Ford, along with Red Angus Associa- tion CEO Tom Brink and leaders from both organizations were instrumental in getting the American Red program con- ceptualized and off the ground. Many of these leaders attended the reception and were pleased to see the program was received so warmly by cattlemen across the nation.

performance,” Fields says. “The combi- nation of mating complementarity of this cross and both SGBI and RAAA’s drive for information-backed genetics make the American Red the perfect fit, at the right time, to fill the needs of commercial cattlemen in a multitude of locations.”  For more information or to enroll in the program, visit www.AmericanRed.org .
