However, it assumes all calves are marketed at weaning or soon thereafter. It further assumes that feeder calf buyers don’t base decisions on feedlot or carcass performance, making these traits less relevant to profitability. Producers marketing their calf crop by the pound at weaning, would utilize this index when making animal selection decisions.  Terminal Index: This index assumes that producers are not keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It assumes that producers are marketing carcasses on the grid, making carcass traits relevant to their business. This index fits operations using Santa Gertrudis bulls as terminal sires and retaining ownership of their calf crop through the feeding phase. SGBI members with an eye on marketing Santa Gertrudis bulls to cattlemen interested in the SGBI/Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) American Red tagging/marketing program will want to pay close atten- tion to the Balanced Index. This index will serve as SGBI’s genetic baseline for American Red program participation.

To qualify for the RAAA-SGBI collabo- ration, steers and heifers must be sired by registered Santa Gertrudis bulls averaging in the top 50 percent of the Balanced Index. These recent changes to the associa- tion’s selection and decision-making toolbox demonstrate that SGBI mem- bers are committed to producing and providing profitable genetics for all members of the beef industry.
