Santa Gertrudis Breeders International 70 th Annual Meeting

Building Better Cattle - Building Better Markets By John Ford, Consultant, Santa Gertrudis Breeders International

S anta Gertrudis Breeders Inter- national’s (SGBI) mission is to breed and market bulls and replacement females for commercial cattlemen, animals that come easy and grow rapidly with the genetic capacity to excel in perfor- mance and profitability. Of course, that is much easier said than done since commercial cattlemen, operating in numerous environments, have diverse breeding objectives, management tech- niques and marketing goals. How do SGBI members meet the challenge of producing the best com- mercial bulls and replacement females for these diverse commercial custom- ers? The answer to this question and other seedstock-related issues will be discussed Saturday, March 27 at the Annual Membership Meeting Field Day, Celebrating Santas , to be held at Wendt Ranches Partners, Bay City, Texas.

The planning committee will host a panel discussion moderated by SGBI Executive Director Webb Fields. An impressive line-up of industry leaders will share their thoughts and insight into breeding cattle that meet the demands of today’s beef industry. Panel members for the event will be industry leaders Donnell Brown, R.A. Brown Ranch; Ky Pohler, Ph.D., Texas A&M University (TAMU) Department of Animal Science; Mike Arnold, Superior Livestock Auction; and Gene Kubecka, Wendt Ranches Partners. Donnell and wife, Kelli Brown, own and operate the R.A. Brown Ranch in Throckmorton, Texas. The ranch was originally established by R.H. Brown and is currently in its fifth generation. The ranch is known for producing some of the best cattle in the industry since 1895. They raise Red Angus, SimAngus and Angus, selling 800 bulls annually

as well as registered and commercial females. Donnell has served in a stra- tegic planning capacity for four differ- ent breed associations as well as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has also served as chairman of the International Genetic Solutions Joint Technical Advancement Committee. Ky Pohler, Ph.D., is an assistant pro- fessor and member of the graduate fac- ulty in the TAUM Department of Animal Science. He grew up in Shiner, Texas, and received a bachelor’s degree in animal science from TAMU in 2009. He then received his master’s and doctor- ate degrees from the University of Mis-
