O ctober is a busy month for the Santa Gertrudis breed! Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) members welcome more than 50 inter- national guests Oct. 4-19 to the Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019 on a 17-day tour from Georgia to Texas. Participants will have the opportunity to visit some premiere Santa Gertrudis operations, visit with

many breeders, see some outstanding cattle and have a bit of fun along the way. This event will help U.S. Santa Gertrudis breeders expand their reach to many other countries and grow the breed globally. Thanks to all who are participating and hosting this great event. The tour will be at Urbanosky Ranch in Plantersville, Texas, Oct. 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will have our Santa Gertrudis clones and the originals on display, along with our current show cattle. We will also have Urbanosky Profit 7-036, our residual feed intake (RFI) phenomenon. We will provide a special complimentary lunch for all who attend. Our featured speaker will be Diane Broek with Viagen, and she will discuss the beef cattle cell cloning process and answer questions. Some upcoming sales that you can attend are the Alabama Connection Sale, Oct. 4-5, the NuGen Foundation Sale and Wendt Ranches Elite Female and Bull Sale, Oct. 19, and the Strait-Hefte Tried and True Production Sale, Oct. 26. The quality represented in these sales gives you an excellent opportunity to add top- quality cattle to your operation. We all need to keep producing better cattle and these sales provide that opportunity. This issue is also a great showcase for the SGBI membership as it contains the directory of all active, commercial and junior members. Membership in SGBI helps the breed grow and flourish but also adds value to your outstand- ing genetics. Keep this reference issue on hand throughout the year so you can easily contact your fellow Santa Gertrudis breeders. Until next time, spread the good news about Santa Gertrudis. Juniors SANTA GERTRUDIS By Hadley Brooks, Secretary and At-Large Director

H ello! My name is Hadley Brooks and I am from Krum, Texas. I am currently serving as an at-large director and secretary of the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association. I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits. This month’s issue of Santa Gertrudis USA is focused on membership and how important it is to gain new members and retain current ones. In my opinion, membership is the most important part of any associa- tion because without the members, there is nothing.

Santa Gertrudis Breeders International members are the driving force of this breed. From marketing and promoting our cherry red cattle, to introducing new people to the breed, members are the most important asset we have. The wiser generations have done an excellent job of maintaining member- ship, and now it is up to the young ones to carry on the tradition. I encourage everyone to invite friends and family to come see what the Santa Gertrudis breed is all about and become breed advocates. I am looking forward to the year ahead and I cannot wait to see all of you in the coming months!
