I will never forget when I was assigned my very own herd number when I was only 8 years old. This meant I was officially a member of Santa Gertru- dis Breeders International (SGBI), the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association (NJSGA) and part of what I would learn to call a new family! Now, as a 16-year-old, that herd number means more to me than just having a number to write on my entries, registration papers and to vote with. Being a member, not only of SGBI but also the NJSGA, means I have the ability to raise my own herd of beautiful, cherry red cattle. It means I have the ability to run for an NJSGA office. This number means I can compete in shows and contests as an official Santa Gertrudis exhibitor.
