Santa Gertrudis Foundation Seeks Donations By Yancey Strait, Director, Santa Gertrudis Foundation A D D I N G V A L U E T O T H E S A N T A G E R T R U D I S B R E E D T H R O U G H R E S E A R C H A N D E D U C A T I O N

Fellow Santa Gertrudis breeders, I am reaching out as the Santa Gertrudis Foun- dation is once again seeking heifer donations for the Santa Gertrudis Foundation’s Legacy Lot program. Last year, the Santa Gertrudis Foundation received donated heifers from Blackjack Oaks Ranch, Reynolds Prairie View Farms, La Campana Ranch, Hefte Ranch and Strait Ranches. The funds from the sale of these heifers, along with funds raised at the The Red Legacy Dinner and Dance as well as previously donated funds, enabled the Santa Gertrudis Foundation to support research efforts at Utah State University and the new international beef initiative at Texas A&M University. Auburn University is using Santa Gertrudis genetics, and other large public universities are currently discussing future research opportunities with breed representatives. The Santa Gertrudis breed has received positive press as a result of the Santa Gertrudis Foun- dation’s recent donations, but I anticipate the impact to be even greater when future research data is published. Through the recent press clippings, quotes and social media posts made by our university partners, I believe we are developing a stronger perception of our breed in the marketplace. This perception is more closely aligned with the reality that our breeders are progressive and our cattle are productive. Continued research will allow our breed to prove our benefits to the beef industry through the collection of sound, science-backed data.
