T he 2024 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show in Orlando, Fla., is now in the books. There was a good mix of cur rent Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) members as well as prospective new members who stopped by the SGBI booth in the trade show to visit. There was also significant interest from others stopping by to introduce the idea of exploring new opportunities through CattleCon 2024 BY CHRIS MCCLURE, SGBI EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

possible alliances. All in all, it was a successful show and, with time and persistence, some of what began in Orlando will bear fruit – and I’m not referring to oranges! As an organization, we need to be prepared to carefully evaluate the opportunities that come our way and how they can help to advance SGBI’s objectives. The cattle industry is changing rapidly around us; small breed organizations are struggling, and the ability to respond to the mounting threats to our way of life will require agility, creativity and initiative. Opportunity abounds and Santa Gertrudis are the right cattle to meet the de mands for more beef with fewer resources, produced at a profitable and sustainable level. Genetics will be a key component and our EPDs’ accuracies and predictability through genomic tools will add value to our cattle. Those tools will help us hone our breeding programs to meet the efforts of commercial cattle producers who are trying to meet those demands. Whether your operation is large, small or somewhere in between, or whether your focus is developing national champion show cattle or selling bulls and heifers to com mercial producers, growing demand for our cattle will lift us all. The future is bright.
