LOGIST ICS  NE I L EFFERTZ Tough Times Never Last, Tough People Do T hese times are challenging, but challenges bring on those who rise to the occasion. The drought in the Northern Plains is as extreme as we’ve seen; beyond severe, they call it exceptional! To stay in the beef cow-calf business under these conditions requires some exceptional measures. Poor forage production is making it even more evident how low maintenance cattle like American Aberdeen Fullblood and Moderator ® cows can stay in good shape, stay fertile and produce good calves on minimal inputs. They can thrive where larger framed cattle get hauled to the local auction market. We are doing a better job of intensive rotational grazing and have made sever al other adjustments to our management system, but I can see we have a way to get through this with extremely low resources because these cattle require less. When we come out the other side of this, I expect we will see increased de mand for good American Aberdeen genetics. We have already seen an increase in commercial demand for American Aberdeen bulls to be used on commer cial heifers at some of the largest ranches in the Northern Plains and mountain regions where labor is short and calving problems aren’t an option. Coming 2-year-old bulls to breed a large volume of heifers is what they want in big ranch country. The American Aberdeen Association ® is seeing an increase in registrations, transfers, new members and revenue over last year at this time. Revenue is up $56,000 over last year’s spring quarterly report because of a 30 percent increase in registrations, an 18 percent increase in transfers and 74 new members! These American Aberdeen cattle are tough, and in these challenging times we can and will see real growth in our low-input, thriving breed! TL
