Frame Impact Continued from page 20

American Aberdeen-crossed with other breeds, but mostly Angus and straight Angus. Frame scores were assigned to the steers being used for the project and then the cattle were classified as medium-large, medium-small or small framed. After grazing, the cattle were finished in a com mercial feedlot and harvested at a large commercial pack ing plant. Results can be found in Table 1. These results show that for measures of carcass yield and quality, frame score was not especially important. As expected, smaller-framed steers had lighter carcass weights, smaller ribeye areas and higher marbling scores. Somewhat unexpectedly, small-framed steers had similar amounts of fat and slightly better yield grades than the medium-large framed steers. In fact, the small-framed steers produced what is essentially the ideal carcass in terms of premiums and discounts. Additional research at NDSU has further examined the impact of frame score and production practices on growth performance, carcass traits and profitability, and can be found at https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/ansci/beef/ as1815.pdf . This research found smaller-framed cattle ex celled when used in a grazing system before entering the feedlot. In this research both the large- and small-framed cattle had excellent carcass traits, making differences between the two groups mostly unimportant. For all of the research reported here, we have only looked at production post-weaning, but similar results are reported for cow-calf production systems. TL
This sweet made, well balanced beauty comes from the imported PerfectionW334 cow family whose dam is sired by the great breeding bull, Boxcar. Her sire is a son of the National Champion, Little Joe. This extremely gentle sweetheart is a super brood cow prospect that should be a tremendously consistent producer. She is consigned to the National Sale January 24, 2020 in Denver, CO.
