Barzona Bulletin A Publication of the Barzona Breeders Association of America

By Matthew Heinz, Golden Hz Farm, BBAA President President’s Message G reetings to you all. I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we finish our summer and transition into fall on our farm, the bulls are

The short answer to changing our place in the industry is data. As a breed, we have to prove what we say and know to be true. As a breed, we can define our own standard and metrics that are important and help our breed excel. The final step, though, is gathering that information and sending it to someone who can compi le those numbers into breed data. Any records you keep is effective data, which can be com- piled to make our breed standard. Every operation is different in what can and can’t be measured, but there are some indus- try standards that we can take advantage of. A fully inclusive number is pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. All you must know is how much your weaned calves weigh (even a grand to- tal is acceptable) and the total number of cows you had exposed to bulls in that season. F. N. Bard measured productivity in the number of weaned calves. For him, under that environment, the bare minimumwas a weaned calf per cow, four out of five years, no excuses. The final step, though, is gathering that information and sending it to someone who can compile those numbers into breed data. This is literally as simple as sending a copy of your calving book or scale sheets to the secretary. Send a quick text or email to the association, and we can compile all the herds across the United States and start making our own “standards” to use for ourselves, selections and advertising. BBAA Past President Dodd Carmichael had a vision to move this association forward – the past is the past. I would like to continue that vision by establishing our data metric and stan- dards, working closely with the sale committee to have a Bar- zona cattle sale in late 2021 or early 2022. I would like to extend an invitation to past Barzona breeders and those who still have Barzona cattle to give me a call at (515) 480-9916 or email me, heinz.matthew57@gmail.com . My door is always open – any comments, concerns or ideas are welcome. In closing, I would like to take a moment to remember Robert Roddenberry. His enthusiasm, drive and spirit for Barzona cattle was infectious to anyone around him. I am humbled and grateful for all I learned from him. See you soon – and until then, keep an eye on the herd up there. BB

getting pulled out, calves will get weaned and pasture cowwork will take place. All of this is worked into the “free” time we have between harvesting crops and other planned or un-planned engagements. Alecia is already thinking about replacements, which calves get to stay bulls and cattle marketing. I have listened to our producers’ frustrations over losing out in the marketplace because our cattle market price is far less than the current average. The question always is, “How do we change our place in the industry?” Other breeds have done their marketing homework and, therefore, control the marketplace. For us to impact future change and achieve positive results when we market our animals, it comes down to dollars and cents. If we show buyers and sellers they are losing money by passing up our Barzona cattle, it will strengthen our foothold in the marketplace.

From Our Association Secretary

By Alecia Heinz, Golden Hz Farm, BBAA Secretary T he 2020 Barzona Breeders Associ-

ation of America (BBAA) Conven- tion was hosted In Montgomery, Ala., by member Raymond Boy- kin. Financially, the association has gained a little bit of ground in the last year, and we hope to continue to do so. The No. 1 topic of discussion was the idea brought up mid-summer during a conference call about having an Annual BBAA Breed Auction. There was a lot of discussion about the idea, and I will do more research on cost, auctioneers, transport options, advertising, sale criteria, etc. It was agreed perhaps a bi-annual sale would be best, probably starting late in 2021 or 2022, and holding it every other year thereafter. The thought was that animal numbers would be better if both yearlings and 2-year-olds were offered at the same time, increasing availabil- ity and numbers in breeding stock (although for feeder calves this wouldn’t be ideal). That works hand-in-hand with most buy- ers saying they would only be purchasing when they need new stock. The survey that was sent out also suggested that registered stock is all that will be allowed to sell, with the exception of feeder calves. Bulls are always sold as singles, but some infor- mation and testing requirements will be enforced. Females will be sold individually or in sets of three, and may also have minor requirements. Videos or slideshows will be used, and the most widely accepted format was an online auction. We will be using our Facebook page and the Barzona Bulletin newsletter lists to circulate most of the sale catalogs publicly, Weichman Feedyard, L.P.

and more will be offered through individual requests. The pos- sibility of holding the sale jointly with another group or breed might be necessary, depending on how costs are billed. We will continue to investigate options before making any final decisions on whether to move forward or not. PLEASE con- tact me with your input as a buyer/seller so we have an expan- sive base to work from. The wider the base, the higher the peak can be. There will be future conference calls about the sale, so watch Facebook and your emails for links and numbers. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Barzona Bulletin news- letter email giveaway due to lack of participation (we had only one entry). Everyone agreed the effort in moving the newsletter viewership to digital failed. We are also looking for any interest- ed parties to run some advertising in the newsletter. We have a circulation of more than 800, so even a one-time ad can be worth your while. Ad rates are listed in the newsletter, so please take a look. I will be sending out questionnaires to members and will be having small articles introducing each operation pub- lished on our website homepage! We have some new breeders in Kansas and are going to po- tentially have the 2021 BBAA Convention in Dodge City, Kan., next June. There are several opportunities in that area, which we hope to take advantage of. Officer elections were held at the end of the business por- tion of the convention. We welcome Matt Heinz of Iowa as our new BBAA president, and Garey Fischer of Oregon as BBAA vice president. Your local points of contact are: Eastern Director, Raymond Boykin, Alabama; Central Director, Dodd Carmichael, Texas; and Western Director, Ron Erjavec, Colorado.
