Support Your Trade Association: Benefits and a Better Tomorrow
By Emily Stribling, Contributing Writer
W ithin the livestock industry, there are a myriad of trade associations you could be a part of; however, you may be on the fence as to whether or not the investment will pay off. Regardless of whether they are national associations or breed/state specific, trade associations work hard to serve their members and keep them in business. Being that they offer a variety of member benefits that are both tangible and non-tangible, it can be difficult to evaluate what you’re actu ally receiving or gaining access to from your membership fees. Each association offers unique mem ber benefits; however, the general ben efits each type of association offers are summarized below. Breed Associations The main objective of any breed asso ciation is to promote the breed’s unique
traits to the industry and, in turn, in crease the breed’s marketing potential. Breed associations may develop specif ic certified programs and incentives to further promote interest in the breed or generate campaigns that highlight de fining breed traits. This is great news for breeders as they have a larger voice advo cating for their cattle and driving demand for the breed among fellow breeders and beyond. Breed associations also provide edu cational services, keeping members up to-date with breed and industry-specific news, as well as aiding in recordkeeping, breeding selection and other opera tion-related decisions. As a member of a breed association, you have the oppor tunity to network with other breeders to share experiences and build contacts that can serve as great resources and even provide you with new buyers. There’s also the opportunity for further increasing
your brand awareness by taking part in breed-specific shows and advertising in the breed publication. State and National Trade Associations State and national associations are also interested in keeping their members in business and providing them the re sources they need to thrive. This is most often done by their ability to serve as a regulatory voice for the industry. From animal welfare to trucking laws, these associations are the producer’s voice in both regulatory and legislative affairs. Some associations offer unique ser vices such as access to cattle-specific, members-only insurance products, ani mal and agricultural theft protection, le gal consultation, Beef Quality Assurance

H appy spring, y’all! I have been working on the Barzo na Breeders of America Annual Meeting details, and I know this newsletter is out a bit late. This year, meeting dates are June 16-18. Our host hotel is the Best West ern in Lindsey, Okla. As usual, Thursday night will simply be ar rival, and we will see about doing a social hour if most people will be arriving at a decent time. Our tour host this year is Bard Cattle Company, and Nancy Nunn will be doing the tours. The business meetings will be held Friday and any tabled agenda items will be addressed on Saturday. Please keep an eye on your emails. I will be sending more de tailed schedules and meeting agendas as we get things set in place. As a side note, PLEASE contact me with your plans to at tend. I can get the meeting room for free if we have 10 sleeping rooms reserved at the hotel. I will also need to know who would like conference call numbers or Zoom meeting links so you can still participate even if you cannot travel. We hope your calving seasons go well. We will plan to see many of you in June! BB

calves are born, I can not help but think about the future. After all, your decisions to day have an impact on what happens tomor row. As cattlemen, we plan for the day to day but how many of us have a five-year, 10 year or 15-year plan? I know here at our farm, sometimes we get caught up in the here and now but don’t look at the long-term goals.

Let’s put some action plans in place to set a clear direction for the association that empowers our next leaders to carry that torch into the next century. I look forward to talking to every one at the annual meeting, and I hope to see all of you there in Lindsay, Okla. BB Our son just bought his first calf and it got me thinking, “What are we doing now to ensure his success? What can I do to help him grow and enjoy this breed?” I believe, as an association, we should be doing the same thing. We are making up ground like Rich Strike in the Derby, but what does the organization have for long-term goals? Where would we like to be in those five- and 10-year windows? Most important, what do we want to pass on to the next generation of Barzona cattle breeders? How can we set them up to have the best foot forward?

Attending meetings allows your voice to be heard and ensures you are best represented by the association on those matters that are important to you. Regardless of breed, state or national affiliation, trade associ ations want to see their members and the industry prosper, now and for future generations. Supporting your trade association not only provides you with a plethora of member benefits but also enables the association to continue working for the better ment of the industry. BB training and market reporting services. These groups are great educational resources, keeping producers informed on indus try-wide current events and news, as well as promoting and supporting the industry as a whole, regardless of breed. Membership fees may be an additional cost, but the benefits can far outweigh the initial investment. If your budget is tight, like most of us, and the operation can only afford limited yearly memberships, taking the time to weigh out the benefits offered by each type of association can best help you determine which association(s) to support. A producer whose primary income is from their commercial operation, for example, may not benefit as much from joining a breed association as they would from a state or national associ ation. However, some specific breeds have great resources for their commercial producers, in addition to breed registrations and recordkeeping, so it’s always worth further investigation to weigh your options. Be Active. Get Involved Regardless of which association you join or how many, be ing an active, supporting member is important to the survival of both the association and the industry. Since trade associations rely on voluntary involvement, membership fees are obviously of great importance to an as sociation’s operation, but your support matters beyond this initial monetary contribution. Advertising in the association’s publication is a great way to further support the association’s efforts, ensuring the publication is able to continue to serve as a means of communicating with members while simultaneously promoting your operation. Supporting the association by donating your time is also a great step. Volunteering to serve on committees for events such as junior shows, socials, trade shows or even going a step further to serve on the association’s board of directors can make a great difference in the association’s success.
