Barzona Bulletin A Publication of the Barzona Breeders Association of America
By Matthew Heinz, Golden Hz Farm, BBAA President President’s Message
Greetings to all of you. I hope you are all doing well. Here at Golden Hz we are in the full swing of summer! The bulls are out, we are making hay and trying to use every ounce of daylight God gives us every day to get our tasks done. Wow! What a meeting! First, I want to thank all of those who came, including several fromTexas and Kansas. Welcome to the Barzona Breeders Association of America. I would also like to welcome our new director at large, Dustin Hawks. I know his knowledge of cattle and the industry will be a huge asset to us as we move forward. I also want to thank the Kansas crew for putting on the annual meeting – Derek, Stacey, Grace, Chan, Rick, Hawks, Cutter and Weichman Feedyard. You all success- fully put on the most well-attended event since I have become a member! I truly hope this is just a glimpse of what is to come. The meeting was phenomenal with the comradery between producers as well as conversations about what has been hap- pening in each region. There was healthy discussion about agenda items to help move the association forward 10 years, 20 years and beyond. We will be having another meeting via con- ference call for the few tabled items to get those resolved.
We finished at Weichman Feedyard. The amount of knowl- edge Norm and Jay have for this breed in the feedlot and pasture is amazing. I am glad they were willing to pass that knowledge on to us as well as any other yard feeding out Barzona cattle. Last, as we continue to establish our goals for the next 20 years, we need to have an open mind. We can make positive changes while maintaining the foundation, this breed and the association we’re built on. I have talked to a few producers since the meeting who want to start a build-up program in their own herd over the next five years. People are still looking for stock; be sure to let the executive secretary know so she can help make buyer/seller connections. In closing, I am going to steel a line from Derek when people ask about the association or the cattle. One thing he asks is, “Do you want in?” Our association is making goals and changes to last for future generations. Do you want in? Let’s all move forward together.
