I n the agriculture sector of the U.S. economy, our input costs will continue to rise, causing a great strain on our bottom line. As of this writing in early October, in the last 10 days, red diesel has gone from $3 per gallon to $4.05 per gallon, and that’s on a transport load of 7,500 gallons. For smaller orders, the cost would be 10 to 15 cents per gallon higher. This only means higher prices for fertilizer that many of our

breeders apply on winter forage and early spring applications on hay and improved pastures. I’m afraid these costs will only continue to skyrocket as we move forward. The old saying – “It’s time to tighten the old belt.” – well, there aren’t many notches left to tighten in the old belt. With that said, your Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) Board of Directors and SGBI leadership are dealing with some challenges. As most of you know, Webb Fields turned in his letter of resignation, effective Sept. 30, 2022. Per our bylaws, until SGBI hires a new executive director, the SGBI president becomes the acting executive director. I have accepted that role and will do the best job possible as we move forward in our search for a new executive director. I have spent time at the office in Kingsville, providing office staff the much-needed leadership that a suc cessfully run office so badly needs. Emma, Kristy and Melissa are doing an admirable job, considering what has gone on since I became president in April. I want as much transparency as possible; for anyone who feels the office is not handling their requests in a timely manner, please reach out to me. I’m available by phone, text or email.

Five Js Cattle Co. Hosts BREEDERS OF THE CAROLINAS FIELD DAY By Jessie Topp Becker, Managing Editor
M ore than 100 people gathered at Five Js Cattle Co., in Clay ton, N.C., on Sept. 24 for the Santa Gertrudis Breeders of the Carolinas Field Day. The event featured several speakers, a beef lunch, high quality cattle and a mechanical bull for the kids and kids-at-heart. The event started with a greeting from Angela Standley, who told attendees how Five Js Cattle has been in the Standley family since the 1800s. She discussed their Santa Gertrudis and Hereford oper ations, along with their STAR 5 program and farm-raised beef sales. “The Five Js family and crew rep resented Santa Gertrudis well,” says Kade Thigpen, Santa Gertrudis Breed ers International (SGBI) Board member. “They showed off their top-end Santa Gertrudis bulls and cows, while also showing the versatility of the breed in their crossbreeding program. Five Js was an incredible host and is one of the breed’s leading programs for Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis/ Herford STAR 5s, as well as purebred Herefords.”
Thigpen, with Hefte Ranch, spoke about the value of hybrid vigor and heat tolerance. Schumann, with Schu-Lar Herefords, spoke about rate of gain, carcass quality, fertility and Vytelle precision genetic livestock performance solutions; he was joined by Vytelle representative Kara Schmidt. Five Js Cattle and Sea-90 Ocean Minerals sponsored a beef lunch featur ing Five Js farm-raised beef, which everyone enjoyed. “All in all, the field day was one of the best I have ever attended,” Thigpen says. “If you ever get a chance to go to North Carolina, take the time to visit our fellow breeders and see the incred ible things they have going on!”
Santa Gertrudis Breeders of the Carolinas President Josh Bowman told attendees about the upcoming Breed ers of the Carolinas Sale, scheduled for May 13, 2023, in Monroe, N.C. This will be the group’s 50th sale. Bowman also shared about a new research program that’s in the works with North Carolina State University that will utilize Santa Gertrudis genetics (watch for more information in future issues of Santa Gertrudis USA ). SGBI Board member Mickey Bowman shared SGBI updates, includ ing the positive direction the breed is moving across the country. Other featured speakers included Kade Thigpen and Bryce Schumann.

Santa Gertrudis USU Collaborative Heterosis Project By Matthew D. Garcia, M.S., MBA, Ph.D., Utah State University PROJECT UPDATE
I t is really hard to believe that we are getting ready to enter the fifth year of our collaborative heterosis project. Initially, we had planned on illustrating the benefits of heterosis, while proving that the Santa Gertrudis breed was going to be adaptable as a crossbreeding strat egy in northern Utah. While we instantly proved calf survivability during calving in February and showed that we can remarkably increase weaning weights while not sacrificing any carcass quality or composition, there was still a lot of information that we had yet to produce. We have been working hard collecting more information, but this project has also taken off in many different directions from Extension, teaching and research perspectives. In this article I will briefly describe a few projects that are currently involving the Santa Gertrudis F1 calves. Feedlot Studies Since this project’s inception, a major objective was to prove that we could increase calf performance (calf surviv ability, weaning weights, etc.) without sacrificing calf feedlot performance, and carcass quality and composition. Every F1 steer produced has entered the feedlot and had carcass measurements taken. When comparing F1 steers to Angus sired steers, there was never a difference in quality grade; however, the F1 Santa Gertrudis steers have always had signifi cantly better (P < 0.05) yield grades than the Angus-sired steers. This means that the F1 steers are producing equal quality, but much higher retail yields of lean beef cuts than the Angus-sired steers. We have been able to repeat this measure ment across years and have also been able to repeat that the F1 steers used significantly less (P < 0.05) feed when finishing to produce these results.
Mineral and Growth Promotant Studies Being that Utah is extremely deficient in copper and selenium, we decided to put the animals into a mineral trial when they entered the feedlot. Animals were given no mineral, injectable mineral or ad libitum loose mineral. The F1 steers performed very similarly with loose and injectable mineral, but were better than the animals that got no mineral. It was interesting that the F1 steers that didn’t receive mineral still performed signifi cantly better than the Angus-sired steers in the feedlot. A second part of this trial was to evaluate how growth promotants would affect performance and carcass qual ity. Although we had proven we could produce a high-quality final product, we needed to verify how growth promotants (widely used in finishing protocols) would affect final product. There is extensive work indicating growth promotants can have a negative effect on carcass qual ity, especially in Bos indicus -influenced animals. Animals were assigned to a no-promotant group, single-promotant or aggressive-multiple-promotant group. What was interesting was that we saw no impact on carcass quality from the non implant group or single-promotant group. The single-implant group was more effi cient during the trial than the no-implant group. However, the double-implant group was not significantly different from the one-implant group with regards to growth but was impacted on carcass quality. Furthermore, the single-promo tant group outperformed the single- and double-implant Angus-sired groups with regard to growth and efficiency in the feedlot, and yielded significantly better, but was not significantly different in carcass quality.
Environmental Study Our research group recently partnered with the range science and soils group to evaluate cattle movement and range usage in rangeland grazing systems. We were approached by this group due to the fact that our F1 cows and heifers seem to be more compatible and resilient in our Utah range environments. They will be measuring cow performance (breed back, calf weaning weights, weaned calf crop), cow pasture utilization (GPS and pedometer measurements) and plant selectivity. Prior to this project, we bred these cows to ensure that no productivity was lost, and we were more than willing to have this data collected because this range ground where they will be evalu ated is where they were going to be prior to calving. This project is really aiming to help us identify more resilient animals that should remain productive during drought and non-drought years. Summary While this project is entering its fifth year, we still have many more projects in the works. The F1 calves have become a hot item for research but are also being incorporated into our teaching curricu lum and have always been part of our Extension program. We have established a core group of 40 F1 cows and will be expanding it to 75 permanent F1 cows in our base herd. These F1 animals will also be incorporated into Extension’s Utah Beef Field Day in February to fur ther highlight the benefit of heterosis in your beef herd. We look forward to our continued collaboration and welcome any comments or suggestions.

STRETCH THOSEWINTER HAY DOLLARS SANTA GERTRUDIS Product ion By Randy L. Stanko, Ph.D., Texas A&M University-Kingsville
N ow, more than ever before, feed cost is the largest contributor to beef cow ranches’ profit or loss. For those of us who feed
time-lapse video and analyzed for cow access, occupancy rate and occurrences of agonistic interactions between cows. Dry matter hay waste was 3.5, 6.1, 11.4 and 14.6 percent for the cone, ring, trailer and cradle feeders, respectively. All cows consumed anywhere between 1.8 to 2.0 percent of their body weight in dry matter hay per day, which was not affected by round-bale feeder type. However, the cows feeding from the cradle feeder (straight line access on both sides with an attached feed bunk) had nearly three times the agonistic interactions and came to feed on the hay four times more than the cows eating from all other feeders. Hay losses were positively correlated with more agonistic cow behavior, frequency of regular and irregular entrances into the hay feeders and occupancy rate of hay feeders. In my opinion, not every round-bale feeder is meant to fit everyone’s management plan. We may not be familiar with one or all of the hay feeders used in this research, but these results should prompt us to do what I love to do best – watch my cows eat! The more that cows come and go from a hay feeder and, moreover, if they cannot or do not get along with each other, the more chance to waste that expensive hay. This research showed that a round, round-bale hay ring/ feeder works pretty well and apparently keeps cow fighting to a minimum. Spend some time with your cows this winter and evaluate hay consumption vs. waste. It will do you both good.
harvested hay (large round bales) for most of the winter, regardless of man agement reasons, we really need to watch the hay waste and cow behavior while at the feeder. I came across a research study report from Michigan State University. I fully understand that cattlemen in Michigan most likely feed more winter hay than typical Gulf Coast cattlemen, however, we all might learn something from their results. Historically, it has been reported that cattle producers can lose anywhere from 2 to 18 percent of a round bale during storage alone. This large variation in dry matter loss can be due to forage type, method of storing, length of storage and, of course, the environmental conditions (like 24 inches of rain in one month). In addition, hay losses due to hay feeding method have been reported to be upwards of 20 to 30 per cent. That is quite a bit of lost “hay-dollars.” To get a more current and accurate estimate of feeding-method hay losses, these researchers compared four different feeding methods (round-bale feeders) available to ranchers in Michigan. Each round-bale feeder type was set upon a concrete pad in the same location in each of eight different pens. For the study, 160 beef cows (1,391 pounds) were sorted by body weight and body condition score into pens with access to a filled hay feeder in groups of 20 cows. Hay feeder types included cone, ring, trailer and cradle. Regardless of hay feeder type, each provided 14.6 inches of linear access to the hay per cow. Specific differences between the cone and ring type bale feeders were that the cone feeders had a solid sheet-metal ring on both the top and bottom of the feeder, while the ring feeder had the solid metal ring only at the bottom. Both round-bale feeder types were a circle, had 18 total feeder spaces (70-degree slanted bars, spaced 14 inches apart) and were 7.67 feet in diameter. The trailer feeder was 20 feet long; however, hay was placed only to cover 12 feet and adjacent to 19 feeding spaces. Alfalfa and orchardgrass round bales were weighed and sampled before feeding, and any hay that fell to the concrete surrounding the feeder was collected daily and considered waste. Cows were rotated between pens with different feeder types every seven days. Cow behavior was also collected by

tion, American International Charolais Association, Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and International Brangus Breeders Association. Both Simmental and Limousin breed associations are close to deciding their involvement. The Livestock Marketing Association also voted to support this endeavor. The momentum continues to build with this industry-changing protocol on how feeder calves are priced in today’s market. As I bring my monthly message to a close, I ask each of you to become active in our association; reach out to our committee chairpersons to see where you can be an asset to our asso ciation. Until next time, let’s do great things together!
and promoting our genetics has never been easier than it is today. Having this luxury right at our finger tips is especially handy for people like me who live in areas where Santa Ger trudis breeders aren’t as abundant. Now, instead of driving 18 hours to a sale, I can watch and even make purchases from the palm of my hand. I can get updates from friends and fellow exhibi tors at shows I can’t physically attend. Let’s focus on the positive sides of social media and how it can help us all grow as breeders and exhibitors. I look forward to seeing all of you down the show road – or, in the meantime, on social media!
exciting news about these sales is the influx of new breeders investing in our red-hided Santas. I have reached out to a number of breeders who have shown an interest in renewing their member ships and putting their cattle back in the SGBI inventory. The board will have met at the SGBI office in Kingsville by the time you read this. It has been a long time since the board has actually met in person in Kingsville. Our main purpose of that meeting is for the board members to see the day-to-day office operations and each staff member’s responsibili ties. We will also meet a number of the individuals who have shown interest in the executive director’s position and give them an opportunity to ask the board questions. A search committee will be formed to review the interested applicants. Hopefully in two to six months, this committee will have some one selected to present to the board of directors. A quick side note on the Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force. The following entities have committed funding to this project: American Hereford Associa
