What Door Will You Choose?

G uess what? I’m back with an other motivational quote. But, before we get to that, let me give you some background as to why I’ve come up with this one in particular. Most of you probably saw, but in mid-August, Santa Gertrudis Breed ers International (SGBI) held a fo cus group. First, I’d like to extend a gigantic thank you to Rafael, James, Marilyn and the entire crew at Chero kee Ranch & Castle Foundation who made incredible hosts! There will be more information on the focus group, but the premise was this: The top 20 breeders, the SGBI Long Range Plan ning Committee, board of directors and at-large delegates from each district got together to think about a strategic direction for the future. Throughout the course of the focus group, there were four main top ics that kept coming up – education, marketing, collaboration and innova tion. While all of these are high-pri ority areas of importance, innovation sticks out the most to me personally. Why? Well, because I think we have to be innovative to tackle all of the other high-priority areas I just men tioned. I gave a presentation to the fo cus group attendees and, to sum it up very quickly, registrations have been down the past few years. Why is that? Well, some of it has to do with things we can’t control such as COVID-19 and widespread drought across the country. But the rest of the point I tried to make, and many of you have heard me say something similar, is what do we do to combat this? How

the focus group very well: “I’ve always seen life like a series of doors. Some times you get to choose the door you go through; sometimes you don’t get that choice. But you still gotta walk through. So, you can either go kicking and screaming or walk through with your head held high.” We’ve gone through the doors we want to, and now I think it’s time we go through the doors we have to. In order to make the things we want to do re ality, we’re going to have to be inno vative and maybe even go down some paths that make us uncomfortable but are necessary. As you’re reading this, we’re probably in a board room discussing some of the ways we can invest in this innovation and plotting the path we need to take to improve, not the one we want to that is just comfortable. But that doesn’t happen with just the board or a committee. It happens with ALL of you. We all have to be innovative, we all have to agree to step out of our comfort zone a bit, and we all have to continue to keep the end goal in mind, no matter what set of doors that takes us through. There’s my regularly scheduled monthly TED Talk. If you want to chat more about it and ideas for a con tinued strategic direction, catch me around this fall! Sale season is start ing to ramp up and I hope to see you all around and continue to meet new people! Support your friends, cus tomers and sellers and continue to work together and work for progress! And as always, remember it’s about BREED improvement, not only herd improvement.

can we be innovative not only in the way we approach the basic issue, but also in how we resolve it? The first way is through chang ing the mindset. I’m not 100 percent sure where this quote came from, but someone told me once that in to day’s rapidly changing cattle indus try, standing still is as good as mov ing backward. We’re all guilty of being comfortable. Why would I change if I’m comfortable? Well, being com fortable is the quickest way to fall be hind. That’s not just in cattle produc tion; that applies to anything in life. That’s where I get to what Jay Pritchett said in the tv series Modern Family . If you haven’t seen Modern Family , check it out on Hulu because it is a hilarious sitcom that Kelsey and I watch to get a good laugh. But just like with Ted Lasso , some real inspi ration can come out of the show as well. Jay is the patriarch of the fam ily and, while he tries to be funny, he also provides a lot of the wisdom from the show. I thought this quote of his summed up my main takeaways from We all have to be innovative, we all have to agree to step out of our comfort zone a bit, and we all have to continue to keep the end goal in mind, no matter what set of doors that takes us through.

Focus on the Future

I f Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) has not arrived at the cross roads, they are certainly in view. In an industry where economies of scale pro vide a competitive advantage, small registries like SGBI must determine how their breed’s genetic package fits into a constantly evolving industry and then determine the best approach to expanding the breed’s industry footprint. Long term viability, in an industry where economies of scale dominate, requires SGBI membership to be fully invested in the association and ready to accept the chal lenges of a small registry head-on. With this thought in mind, SGBI hosted a breeders focus group at the Chero kee Ranch & Castle in mid-August to discuss challenges the association faces. At the conclusion of the two-day event, participants identified four areas that need association attention in order to keep SGBI viable and expand the breed’s industry footprint.  Education – It is important that the association develop and implement a comprehensive effort to educate all industry stakeholders about the value of Santa Gertrudis genetics.  Marketing – Recognizing that a number of factors drive customer profit ability, executing programs and activities that enhance the marketability of Santa Gertrudis genetics is essential for long-term viability. Currently, the lack of “critical mass” hampers the association’s ability to grow market share, and steps must be taken to grow cattle inventory.  Collaboration – SGBI members must set self-interest aside and be open to forming partnerships and collaborations, inside and outside the associa tion, that will ensure profitability among commercial beef producers utiliz ing Santa Gertrudis genetics.  Innovation – SGBI must be innovative and focused on creating value for all members of the beef industry chain. It can no longer be business as usual for SGBI. The association must identify innovative approaches in order to pro

vide beef industry members with the information, tools and support needed to ensure profitability. Of course, these four areas simply scratch the surface. There are other areas that need association atten tion, including revenue generation. Coming together at Cherokee Castle to discuss association needs and di rections was a start toward meeting the challenges of being a small beef registry. Let’s build off these findings and keep pushing forward.

Generations of Connection Thanks to SGBI

H ow far back can you trace your family’s involvement with the Santa Gertrudis breed? For siblings Yancey Strait and Callie (Strait) Loden of Strait Ranches, it’s easy. Their great grandfather, Y.C. Strait, joined Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) in the organiza tion’s founding year – 1951 – obtain ing herd number 453, and serving as a charter member of the South Texas Santa Gertrudis affiliate. Fast forward 72 years and five gen erations, SGBI is more than an annual membership renewal for the family – it’s a core part of life, with emerging multi-generational traditions in lead ership, connection and involvement. Growing up on the family ranch, Yancey and Callie were involved from a young age in the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association (NJS GA). Yancey got his start after catch ing a calf in the San Antonio Live stock Show and Rodeo calf scramble and joined the junior association to show the heifer he’d won. As the say ing goes, the rest is history.

It may have started with a heifer won by chance, but even after catch ing that calf, Yancey kept on running with the opportunities presented. He served on the NJSGA Board of Direc tors and as president of the junior as sociation. Callie took part, too, serving on the junior board and representing the Santa Gertrudis breed as a na tional queen. Today, both of their families remain involved in SGBI. Callie currently serves on the Finance Committee and as co chair of the Donated Heifer Committee. Yancey, a former SGBI president, con tinues to serve on the board of directors and chairs the SGBI Foundation, while his wife, Heather, is active on the Youth Activities Committee. Over the years, though, it’s become less about balancing their own sched

ules and more about sharing new ex periences with the next generation. Family Traditions “Growing up, our parents didn’t just encourage us to get involved,” Callie says. “They got involved right along with us.” Today, Yancey and Heather work with Callie and her husband, Jake, to carry on the tradition alongside their mom, Cynthia, who remains active in the South Texas affiliate organization and supports her grandchildren as they get their start in NJSGA activities. Callie and Jake’s daughters, Piper (11) and Nellie (9), are already tak ing part in a number of NJSGA con tests alongside Yancey and Heather’s daughters, Avery (15) and Arden (12). “It has been so refreshing, wonder ful and fun to watch our kids build these great friendships just like we did and gain so much confidence in themselves,” Callie says. “To watch our friends’ kids become our kids’ friends … we grew up to gether and now we get to watch our kids grow up together, too. It’s an in credibly special experience.” It Starts With A Decision “In our family, prior generations were not as active in the organization as we have become,” Yancey says. “Members, yes, but our involvement on a larger scale really didn’t start until Callie and I joined the youth or ganization.”

Shared Goals Having been involved with SGBI in so many different roles over the years, Yancey is a firm believer that there is a seat at the table for anyone who wants to be involved. “If you’re new, or considering get ting involved in a bigger way, know that you are always welcome. We may all be making different decisions for our respective herds, but at the end of the day, we all have the same goals: improving the cattle we’re raising, en suring Santa Gertrudis has a place in the industry and continuing to market in ways that earn us the value we know our cattle deserve,” Yancey says. “When we recognize that we have much more to benefit from common goals than competition, it’s easier to reach out to one another, start conver sations and identify new opportunities that will make us all better,” he says. Long-Lasting Legacies Now watching a second genera tion of the Strait and Loden kids get involved in youth activities, Cyn thia stays involved with the South Texas junior affiliate and serves on the South Texas adult affiliate board. She and her husband, Y.N., had been active in encouraging the family’s involvement over the years, and she continues to carry on the tradition. When Y.N. passed away in 2021, the family established a memorial scholarship in his name with the Na tional Santa Gertrudis Youth Foun dation, providing academic opportu nities for youth who are involved with the breed.

“What a blessing it is to get to do what your father did, what his father did and what his father did,” Yancey says. “We count our blessings every day and are so grateful for the oppor tunities that have been provided to our family. We know Dad would be proud to support the successes of our next generation of Santa Gertrudis leaders.” “The Santa Gertrudis breed is our foundation and our focus,” Callie says. “It always will be. If your family is new to Santa Ger trudis and wondering how to get started, the Strait and Loden families say to dive on in. “We were all the new kids on the block at some point,” Cynthia says. “We wel come anybody who wants to be a part of making our breed and our kids better by stepping up and getting involved. “If one of us is successful, we’re all successful,” Callie continues. “Joining SGBI is about seeing the big picture, and it’s a privilege to be a part of it. What benefits us, benefits everyone, “When we were new to the organi zation, I was learning right alongside the kids,” Cynthia says. I loved watch ing their successes and seeing the re lationships they were building.” “Most of all,” she continues, “I love that everybody cheers for everybody. We still cherish those friendships we have made along the way, and it’s ex citing to see my granddaughters having some of those same great experiences.” Being involved with SGBI, especially at the youth level, provides so many opportunities for learning, relationship building and personal growth. From contests in public speaking to brain bowl, livestock judging, cattleman’s contest and photography, to leadership opportunities on the junior board and the chance to serve as breed royalty are just a few of the many possibilities open to youth in the organization. As the fifth generation now taking part in the fam ily business, the Strait and Loden girls are following in their parents’ footsteps as active members. “It’s amazing to see what they have accomplished as they’ve gotten older and more involved,” Cynthia says. “Both of Yancey and Heather’s daughters have been national prin cess. Avery is vice president of the junior board, and she has attended GOALS multiple times. New De-Wormer Enters Market

Z oetis released a novel combi nation anthelmintic this past summer called Valcor. This new product requires a veterinary prescription and offers broad-spec trum control of both internal and ex ternal parasites (grubs, lice and mites). In a study conducted by Zoetis involv ing more than 1,500 five-weight heif ers, Valcor reduced fecal egg count by 99.9 percent within two weeks post treatment vs. an 85 percent reduction by a very common anthelmintic avail

for a 1,200-pound cow or $4.10 for a 550-pound calf. Please remember that Valcor is to be given subcutane ously in the neck area. This product does have a 15-day slaughter with draw and could cause injection-site swelling. This possible swelling makes the neck area of cattle the most ap propriate site for injection. Valcor comes with a 45-day expira tion after initially puncturing the vial. Zoetis recommends using a luer-lock syringe and an 18-gauge needle for in jecting this product. In addition, Zoe tis recommends puncturing the stop per top only six times and a maximum of 28 times in the 100-mL and 250 mL or 500-mL bottles of Valcor, re spectively. If producers choose to use a multi-draw apparatus with a spike or needle larger than an 18-gauge bore diameter, then any remaining product should be discarded after ini tial use. Keep in mind that, because of this recommendation, treating larger herds could get expensive. New and improved beef cattle phar maceutical products do not come to market that often. Give Valcor a try while it is available and in stock, es pecially if you believe that your cur rent de-worming protocol may have a weakened efficacy over time. This new combination product should have cattle internal parasites running for cover.

So why must we obtain a prescrip tion for Valcor? One could assume it is because we all need to work together on reducing the chance for para site resistance to this new product. Drug resistance of internal parasites is caused by treating cattle too often, treating the whole herd (vs. those cattle that need it) and under-dosing. Moreover, this new product is ap proved only for use in beef and dairy cattle and not small ruminant live stock . Beef cattle of at least 2 months of age or older and dairy replacement heifers younger than 20 months of age can be treated with Valcor. However, the safety of Valcor for use in breeding bulls has not been evaluated. So for now, use it on beef steers, beef heifers and beef cows only. My gut feeling is that most new livestock pharmaceu tical products in the future will re quire a veterinary prescription. The Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture are encouraging all livestock producers to establish a veterinarian-client patient relationship with a local vet erinarian. This model has been estab lished with the purchase and use of livestock antibiotics. Valcor is available in 100-mL, 250 mL and 500-mL bottles and should be comparably priced to other anthel mintics. I priced it at $0.41 to $0.49 per mL; it is cheaper to purchase the larger bottles. That equals about $9

able from multiple livestock pharmaceutical companies. Valcor is a single, subcu taneous injection product that contains doramectin and levamisole. The dos age of Valcor is 1 milliliter (mL) per 55 pounds of body weight. Each mL of Valcor contains 5 milli grams (mg) doramectin

and 150 mg of levamisole. These in gredients cause paralysis (levamisole paralyzes worms) and death (dora mectin kills nerve cells) of 35 differ ent parasites. Interestingly, levami sole mimics a natural molecule and over-stimulates muscle cell receptors for that molecule. The overstimula tion of parasite muscle cells causes paralysis. Doramectin modulates the chloride (the same chloride in table salt, NaCl) ion channels of neurons so they cannot function normally.
