tants, influencers, etc., the backbone is and remains the membership as a whole. When decisions are made, it must be made with the intention that it posi tively helps the association as a whole, with no weight placed on whether or not it benefits the few. Simultaneously we must remember why we are here. We are all a part of SGBI because we love these red-hided cattle. We love the industry that we are in at large and what it represents, and we are doing business and associating ourselves with like-minded people. For the breed to grow and flourish we must remember not only to strive for progress but also reach out among one another for friendship and fellowship. Lucky for us, we have some of the best people I know within our membership, and the future remains bright for Santa Gertrudis.

Trail Talk EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT By Webb D. Fields (361) 592-9357 | wfields@santagertrudis.com

A full plate does not seem like the right term for this time of year – school, sports, work, cattle sales, cattle shows, etc. You name it and the list just seems to get longer. For Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI), this is no different. The SGBI Board of Directors continues to be active in just wanting to communicate more among themselves. After a goal set this spring not only to have more interaction among the board but also relay that information back to mem bership more aggressively, the board continues to meet frequently to ensure goals are being set and deadlines are met. At the same time, it has been fun to see the committees continuing to be active, allowing for more feedback and activity among those members who might not be on the board, but who have great ideas and want to have involvement within the breed. After much discussion, the board of directors has determined that, because SGBI is an association run by its mem bership, the members have the right to data and information that they collected on their herd. As a result of this deci sion and requests we have received, SGBI has shared performance and DNA information back with members who have submitted those requests. We continue to work openly alongside our members to fulfill any requests we receive that allows you, as a member, to better quantify quality within your herd and market that quality. If you ever have a request or feel that we could potentially provide something for you to better your operation, just let us know. We have also recently added to the SGBI staff. Kristy Gonzalez joined our office this past month. Kristy is work ing on a part-time basis, filling in some of the gaps left by Diana’s retirement. While Diana continues to help on a part-time basis, having Kristy in the office allows us to operate at capacity. She is already proving of value, and I am excited to have her on the team. As this is the membership issue, a few thoughts come to mind. Without

its members, SGBI would not exist. More than 70 years of like-minded people getting together and developing relationships over a breed of cattle is really the backbone of our association. Like any well-run association, rules and structure must be implemented and changed from time to time as the need arises and needs of the membership change. While there must be leader ship, a board of directors, staff, consul

Following recommendations from the association's Long Range Planning and Research and Education committees, the Santa Gertrudis Breeders Interna tional (SGBI) Board of Directors recently voted to join the Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force. This decision will make a significant difference for Santa Gertrudis breeders and the price they get for their feeder calves. I am very excited about this new endeavor, and I encourage you to read more about it on page 44. As our breed moves forward through thick and thin, we must come together to meet the challenges that are before us. SGBI Past President Nancy Wun derlich wrote this in her President’s Letter a year ago: The SGBI preamble charges our membership to ‘continue the improvement of the Santa Gertrudis breed of beef cattle …’ Now, we as a membership, has to work together to meet this goal for the breed’s survival in an ever-changing, fluid cattle market. Working together means that we bring to the decision-mak ing table our own experiences of ‘good works’ to move forward, putting aside our own personal agendas. Deliberations need to be greeted with respect and consideration from all to make decisions based on the most recent information we have at hand that is best for the Santa Gertrudis breed’s integrity and dig nity in the cattle industry. Once these decisions are made, after all the heated discussions and deliberations, we must emerge as a united membership with sound speech to keep moving in a positive direction that is best for the breed. As a diverse membership working together, we must continue to combine our sundry of talents along with our varied experiences to accomplish our purpose in the cattle industry. A longtime

SGBI member explained that the ‘best way for members to understand how things work is to get involved.’ I challenge you as a progres sive SGBI member to join the decision-making process and show yourself to be a model of good works. Fall sale catalogs are being prepared and mailed. There is an abundance of sales each fall where breeders can add some really outstand ing genetics to their herds. The SGBI office continues to process membership renewals and herd inventory updates. If you have not had a chance to do this, please take time to get your herd inventory and membership up to date. Let’s do great things together!

I f a new show family asked you, “Why Santa Gertrudis?” what would you say? Howdy. I’m Madison Moran, a 17-year old from Brenham, Texas. I am currently serving as the National Junior Santa Ger trudis Association (NJSGA) secretary and a District 1 director on the NJSGA Board. My love for Santa Gertrudis cattle was never a

a group. The key to keeping a strong membership is having benefits that members can enjoy. The SGBI Foundation is constantly giving back to the junior members in the form of generous scholarships to graduating seniors. Another benefit to our members is the outstanding donated heifer program that our breed has at the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show. This is a huge talking point to get new members into the door when they are considering joining the association. Our asso ciation has many events that entice junior members and their families to become and stay involved through the years. CONTINUED ON PAGE 38 

CALF SCOURS IS A MULTI-FACETED PROBLEM SANTA GERTRUDIS Product ion By Randy L. Stanko, Ph.D., Texas A&M University-Kingsville I would venture to guess that most of us received much needed late summer/early fall rain. It sure was nice, maybe too much and too late, but we will take it. In some parts of south Texas, it rained consistently for several weeks in a row. This amount

the newborn calves must nurse colostrum to receive full protection. With all this information, it would be safe to assume that mother nature sets us up for a perfect “storm” of calf scours. With severe drought affecting most of the beef cattle country in the southern United States, many fall-calving cows ended their gestion period in poor body condition. Those cows that calved prior to the monsoon most likely had scour-free calves. However, once the rain started and then continued, those calves were born in less-than-optimal environmental conditions and may have been consuming sub-par colos trum. The rain continued. Everything got worse and many, many calves had scours. Treatment for calf scours must focus on fixing the dehydra tion, acidosis and electrolyte loss problems. Oral fluids will work early in the treatment, but if dehydration progresses then intravenous fluid treatment may be necessary. Anti biotics can be given along with the fluids, either orally or by injection. Always consult with your veterinarian which antibiotics are most effective in the treatment of calf scours in your region. Oral electrolyte powders can be purchased from any animal health retailer. If it is impossible for you to acquire any, I came across a homemade recipe: 1 tablespoon of baking soda + 1 teaspoon of salt + 8 ounces of 50 percent dextrose (not table sugar); then add enough warm water to prepare 1 gallon of stock fluid. Administer up to 1 quart of the stock fluid every four hours as the only source of nutrition for a period of 24 to 48 hours. Warning! Do not feed any milk or milk replacer because it will make things worse (bacteria love milk). Put the calf back with its milked-out dam as soon as it can stand and follow her.

of rain produced wet, muddy and extremely challenging environments for fall-calving herds. Many produc ers were battling mild to severe cases of scouring calves coincident with the increased moisture. Thus, I was prompted to review the causes of calf scours. No doubt, a scouring calf is something we would prefer to not see in the calving pen/pasture. Scours in a calf is not a single-disease problem but rather a symptom of many possi ble health problems (Ex. bacterial, viral, protozoan or yeasts/ mold). Diarrhea (scours) prevents normal absorption of fluid from the digestive tract, which leads to more body fluids passing into the intestine. The major problems resulting from scours are severe dehydration, loss of essential electrolytes (Na, K) and a build-up of an acidic environment within the digestive track. A baby calf is born consisting of 70 percent water, and a severe bought with scours will cause it to go “downhill” rapidly. Death due to scours is predominantly due to dehydration, regardless of the initial infectious agent. Specific causes of calf scours are grouped into nonin fectious and infectious categories. To prevent scours, we need to work on both categories in a programmatic fashion because they seem to work together. Noninfectious causes of calf scours include poor dam nutrition during the last one third of gestation, which influences the quantity and qual ity of colostrum; poor environment (muddy, wet, crowded, manure contaminated) for the newborn calf, causing added stress plus increased exposure to infectious agents; and diffi cult birthing, adverse weather during calving and inadequate consumption of colostrum (precious antibodies). Recall that we have a limited amount of time (6 to 12 hours) for the calf to absorb those colostrum antibodies. Infectious bacterial agents that can cause calf scours are Escherichia coli , Salmonella , Clostridium perfringens and others. Infectious viral agents include rotavirus, coronavirus, BVD virus and IBR virus. Protozoan agents that can cause calf scours are coccidia and cryptosporidium. If the cow herd has been vaccinated for any or all of these infectious agents,

DNA Submission Procedures

T he Santa Gertrudis Breeders Inter national (SGBI) office is experienc ing an increase in the number of DNA submissions we are receiving. With this in mind, we thought it was a good time to share some reminders of the DNA submission process to help you successfully navigate the steps. When it comes to DNA testing, the earlier you submit your samples, the better. By submitting your samples as soon as possible, the more likely you are to save yourself unnecessary stress and frustration. It takes four weeks from the time a breeder mails their samples to SGBI to when they receive DNA results from the association. If there’s any re-testing or incorrect paperwork delays, four weeks can quickly turn into eight. It’s always best to plan ahead and allow for extra time in case there are problems with the initial submission. When collecting DNA, remember to use the proper DNA testing kits from Neogen, including tissue sample units (TSU), and hair and blood cards. Once DNA samples are collected, complete the SGBI DNA submission form, which is available to download from the SGBI website under Member Resources tab. When completing the DNA submis sion form, follow these steps: 1. Properly identify your samples using the sample barcode indicated on the test kit and list the SGBI regis tration number for the animal from which the sample was collected. It is imperative that the animal’s regis tration number corresponds to the DNA sample so the genomic data will be linked to the animal in the DigitalBeef registry system. 2. Indicate the test product you seek for genotyping. 3. List a herd number for your order. This is important for work order/ billing information and to ensure you receive updates on your DNA submission. 4. For sire tracing and animals with multiple sires, complete the section on the form under Parentage and list possible sire(s). Does the sire and/ or dam have DNA on file? If not, parentage results will not be found. 5. If you make a mistake when completing the form, it is best to complete a new form entirely. Infor mation can be easily misinterpreted; therefore, list only the registration number of the animal and the cor

to ensure the straw is protected during shipment. Place the pen tube with straw in a Ziplock bag and padded envelope for ship ping. (Straws can be stored at room temperature.)  Insufficient blood is spotted on the blood card. Ensure the circle is filled and blood is visible on both side of the paper. Let the blood dry completely before closing the card.  Improper shipping can damage plastic Ziplock bag and mailed in a sturdy, padded envelope. TSU samples should be placed in a plastic Ziplock bag and shipped in a box or padded/bubble envelope. Upon receipt of DNA samples, SGBI’s DNA coordinator will complete a pre-submission test order and will mail the samples directly to Neogen's test lab. DNA submission occurs twice a month, early to mid-month and again at the end of the month. Genomic information will be available for parentage verification in four to six weeks, and the results will be provided via email. Be sure to list your primary email address on your member profile to receive results and updates on DNA submissions. Completing the DNA submission form is the best practice for ensuring your DNA samples will be processed in a timely manner. Questions regarding DNA collection and the submission pro cess should be directed to SGBI DNA Coordinator Melissa Braden by email ing melissa@santagertrudis.com or calling (361) 592-9357. DNA samples. Hair and blood cards should be placed in a

responding DNA sample barcode clearly in each designated section on the form. 6. Do not send samples without an accompanying DNA submission form as this will delay the process. The DNA coordinator will request a completed form before processing your DNA order. 7. For large DNA submissions, please provide a separate listing of the ani mals and sample barcodes, prefer ably in table/spreadsheet form. 8. Send the submission form and accompanying DNA samples to SGBI, PO Box 1257, Kingsville, TX 78363. We encourage you to ship your samples to SGBI using a method that allows you to track the shipment. A failed sample may result due to poor-quality DNA. Some general issues for sample failure include:  No tissue was present in the TSU vial or the sample was trapped in the cap, preventing it from being preserved. TSU should be kept at room temperature and are viable for 12 months after collection. To prevent DNA degradation, keep TSU from lengthy exposure to sunlight.  Too few follicles on the hair card collector or small follicles taken from young calves (DNA occurs at the root, not on the hair strand).  Semen straws can be easily damaged, so proper packaging is highly recommended. Use an empty ballpoint pen tube and cap

It takes four weeks from the time a breeder mails their samples to SGBI to when they receive DNA results from the association.
